The Senior Resource Center invites the community to step back in time and meet four fascinating women whose lives unfolded during the tumultuous years of World War I. Women of Courage and Commitment are a historical reenactment group from Galena, Illinois.

The program, “Women of Courage: World War I,” brings history to life through the stories of four remarkable women: Emma Goldman, Edith Cavell, Gertrude Bell, and Mata Hari.

Activist Emma Goldman risked deportation because of her outspoken opposition to military conscription. British nurse Edith Cavell served as a hospital matron in German-occupied Belgium, where her bravery made her an international heroine. Archaeologist and Middle East expert Gertrude Bell worked with T.E. Lawrence during World War I and later played a role in shaping the future of Iraq. And Mata Hari, the famous dancer accused of espionage, remains one of World War I’s most mysterious figures.

Through historical reenactment and meticulously researched storytelling, Women of Courage and Commitment shares the true stories of remarkable women from the 19th and 20th centuries who made significant impacts on history.

The presentation is FREE and open to the public, but registration is strongly encouraged as seating is limited.
