Freeport Martial Arts Academy opened in Freeport, Illinois, on October 25, 2023, to bring the Jiu-Jitsu community to Freeport and offer a fun way to learn martial arts, get in shape, and make new friends.

Freeport Martial Arts offers a full schedule of martial arts classes for adults, teens, and kids ages 6-12, including:

• Jiu-Jitsu, often referred to as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ
• Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), which combines striking and grappling martial arts
• Kids Jiu-Jitsu, which develops traditional martial arts values with modern-day techniques
• Women’s Self-Defense, which addresses domestic violence and sexual assault scenarios

Freeport Martial Arts is owned and operated by John Garvens. Professor Garvens is an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Certified Black Belt under Professors Adem Redzovic, a Fourth-Degree Black Belt, and Clark Gracie, a Fourth-Degree Black Belt. He is the only IBJJF Certified Black Belt in Stephenson County.
